Congo Tetres

What size communal tank and what other fish were you planning on keeping them with?

3ft is the absolute minimum. Congos are gentle but may reach five or six inches and need space when full grown.

Compatibility questions are easier if we don't have to work with everything available to the hobby. Congos are gentle fish that are suitable for a community of most fish. Do you have any other species in mind that you'd like to keep? If you put them up here we can okay them (or not). It's just a lot easier than trying to work out off the top of my head what congos might NOT be compatible with because it would suck if I missed something.

as already mentioned they grow quite large, although they start of small they will grow to about 10cm of about 4 inches,

also when they mature they get long fin so dont put with fin nippers like tiger barbs etc....

also advice on stocking, as mentioned keep a minium of 6 as they are an active shoaler, but try to stock with a few females. The males look their best when they display and show off to them... They also like to nibble on soft plants....

They are very peacefull fish, i woul say minium size for them would be 90 x 30 x 30cm.

hope it helps :good:

Yep 6 minimum, with a 3ft tank Im guessing we are talking 30/40g? So with 6 congos, reaching full size of 5" thats 30" of stocking, leaving you IF the tank is 40g with 10" of stocking space (using the 1" per G rule, which isnt always steadfast but a rough guide)

You dont want to put any other type of tetra in there as they will probably nip the congos long fins and as said no tiger bars or other similar nippy fish.

Congos can be very skittish fish, they like plenty of planting and can be a little sensitive to bright lights so its a balace, you could use some floating plants to lessen the lights if they are too much for them.

I would suggest (and its just because I like cichlids) that you could add a pair of rams, blue or bolivian or perhaps keyhole cichlids as they will not bother the congos nor the congos bother them, providing of course its a 40g tank, not 30g. Although after a period of maturity for the tank (6 months minimum) if you water stats are spot on, ie: no ammonia, nitrIte and low nitrAte levels (20-30ppm) you could try for the cichlids mentioned.
