Confused!

Don't put any plants in if you try a fishless cycle (adding ammonia instead of fish), it upsets the ammonia levels, but also if you're new to fish keeping make sure you read up lots about fishless cycling too if you plan on giving it a go.

I disagree... real plants in the tank during a fishless cycle will not make that much difference to the ammonia levels...

They use both ammonia and nitrate to grow, two things you want in abundance to force a fast cycle, if you leave plants until you've almost completely finished then you can cycle fast and use the plants to reduce nitrate levels when you don't need them any more.

Hello Fish-Face, if I was you I would not add plants till later on in the fishless cycle, well thats what I intend on doing. Although either way your tank will cycle so do what you prefere to do.

One word of warning tho Do Not Smell The Ammonia Your Putting In

I had a big sniff of mine first time I opend it( to make sure it wasn't perfumed). Big mistake, it knocked me for 6, eyes and nose took a good 30mins to recover.

Both my fully planted tanks cycled in under 2 weeks, I really don't know how much faster I could have gone without plants- I mean, tanks just don't cycle faster than that do they? My take on this is that plants mainly consume nitrates which are the end product of the cycle anyway, so they don't interfere with the
bacteria growth.

Looks like you had some trouble posting there Lisa, you should try to preview your posts :fun:

For some reason it blanks it out when I try to post it to. TFC must is censored for some reason. :/

at the end of the day each of us will find a method that works for us - so with this i lay down the glove of peace to all

thanks piper must be a blond thing lol

As to the question of cycling with or without plants, I don't know the true effects either way. I cycled my 75 gallon in 3 weeks and it was heavily planted. The plants will get pretty well covered in brown algae but a couple good algae eaters will clean that up pretty quickly. One thing I do know though is that a beautifully planted tank is a lot easier to look at for the 2 to 4 weeks it takes to fishlessly cycle that is an empty tank with a few artificial ornaments. My 75 gallon was a pretty tank and looked good even though it didn't have any fish in it.

thanks like you say will look alot better "a couple good algae eaters " what do you mean?
Something like Otos, Siamese Algae Eaters, Plecos or amano shrimp (good option if you like inverts and won't have fish that would eat them). For brown algae, I think the otos or SAEs would do a better job.
