Getting old, but nowhere near knackered, i just lo
ok firstly as many know i own a LFS but the situation is that i have NEVER had any experience with cichlids up until a few weeks ago, im learning as i go along by googling
so please be gentle with me
as my main area is bettas.
anyway i ended up with 15 cichlid fry from an auction and at the point of driving halfway home i forgot what type they were, i lost over time 13 of them and ive ended up with a sexed pair that have paired up and i think they have spawned but im unsure
, they turned out to be jewel chiclids after the male coloured up, they are in a 6 x 2 x 1 foot tank on their own so that the female had a chance to get away from him if needed, after observing the last couple of weeks the male became very aggressive so ive now learnt that this is part of their courtship, she vanished one day and i searched high and low for her, there is loads of salvinia natans and oblongfolia in the tank so i gave up.
Anyhow she appeared yesturday after 5 days of being missing and he is occasionally chasing her but not as bad as before, they thing is, is that she looks like she is mouth brooding, there seems to be a pouch and i can clearly see something in it, its like a mass black?? she tries to keep herself to herself and things look ok, apart from the black area the pair are in perfect health.
Now ive read that jewels lay on flat surfaces and then when the fry hatch they move the fry to somewhere else, ive looked at the slate that is in the tank and its clear that there has been some activity around it as the gravel has been moved and there are small bubbles attatched to the slate.
my questions are:
Do they mouth brood at some point? if not is she looking for somewhere else to settle the fry?
like i say im new to this side of aquatics so i thought who best to ask but you guys.
cheers
oh the tanks is now having BBS added to it daily as well
