Ok, so today I bought some flat rocks and some ocean rock and after reading pinned topic it says to lay rocks against glass bottom to prevent fish from digging underneath...

So today I removed the sand... I don't feel safe with the rocks against the glass like that so looked online again, and there is some info stating you should raise the rock base to prevent the rocks cracking the glass.

What have you all done, and what do you all recommend I do next (#41#### layout already in tank but sand not back in yet).

Cheers

I used Aquarium silicone and glued my rocks together to form caves. I have sand substrate and just made sure my rock caves and buried to the bottom of the sand. The fish have dug out the caves inside forming a sand wall in front of the caves leaving just enough opening to get in and out.

What size is your tank? The glass should be fine its a lot stronger than what you think, In mine i have rocks that weight easy 150kg some pieces alone weighting nearly 30KG each and my glass is fine. Heres an old pic of how my tank looked :good:

if un doubt lay a sheet of plastic eggcrate in the bottom of the tank place the rocks on it then add your sand :good:

Thanks, its a 4ft and I really don't think my rocks weigh that much plus they are all flat against the bottom of the tank.

Your tank looks great :) I wish I could have afforded to get better rocks but with money tight I just wanted to provide the fish plenty of hide outs etc.

Plastic egg crate? Where do I get this?

Cheers

Thanks :) just taking a break from putting the sand in...

Doesn't look quite so impressive now the bottom "tunnels" are covered. I'm guessing they'll enjoy it though, I may add more rocks at a later date, I'm betting with my luck the cycle will take a year, lol. Wish me luck for the start on Tuesday!

Hey Locust 267 the plastic egg crate is what i had on my base then constructed the rockwork on this, i then placed the sand around the rockwork pushing it into the gaps where the crate was visable i purchased it from my LFS i have a 4x2x2 tank and a sheet cost me £12 it covered the whole base and i had a little left over hope this helps good luck with the construction

With regards to the cycle i purchased 2 AQUA FILTER GEL sachets from LFS the tank was cycled in a week perfect water conditions all you do is put the gel on the filter sponges and leave the tank running testing after 24 hours then again a few days later once its stabilized do a water change then your good to go :good:
