Conditioning Feeding And Baby Food

Don't worry tropical, you will seriously most likely have a huge die off rate. I'm not being critical it just happens to most their first time (or first few). I don't think you will need to worry about it. I thought the way you did until I had a giant kill off with my first spawn. I now just have one left and he's eating microworms, assuming the rest starved to death because they wouldn't eat the liquifry. ANd yes it DOES foul up your tank!

Microworms are perfect because they are almost microscopic and tiny! They are just very tiny little wigglies that stay near the bottom of the tank and catch they attention of the fry. You have to look REALLY close to even see them in there, but my little boy loves munching on them! It's cute watching him get really close them snatch them up real fast. And it's i one fsat bite so it doesn't look torterous (sp?) to the worm. Brine shrimp are great when they get a couple weeks old and be careful because they can get swim bladder with those more easily (or so I hear).

that's what i've heard happens alot during first spawns. i've heard the dad often eats the eggs or babies.

yes that is true but you get some dads that are excellent parents.I was having no luck then my hmpk male was a great dad but left him in there to long and ate them all.He took great care of the eggs though.

Yeah true Hoddy. My little boy was just fine and a wonderful daddy from the beginning. Not all are that way though, as you said.

are there substitutes out there that i can use to condition to breed and for "baby food"? i really dispise (sp?) using live food if it can be avoided. i understand it has to be used in some fishs' diets, but can it be avoided for conditioning and the babies?

The only thing I now use to feed any and all fry is called No BS Fry Food. It is made and sold by a former editor of Tropical Fish Hobbyist Magazine and it is better by far than anything else I have ever used (and I have used EVERYTHING). Forget the live food. It can cause disease and is a pain to raise. This new stuff saves tons of time and money and keeps you from raising stuff alive just to kill it. You can read all about and get this baby food at www.mreed.com You can even send e-mail to the guy who makes it. I got him to send me the published results of tests of the food on discus and other stuff for breeding my guppies and African cichlids.
