ive read a lot on the forum about fry and how to deal with them. some of the fish im intending to have
may breed - livebearers like platies

1 - do you cover the filter intake and with what?

2 - if its a sponge - how thick and does it impede or cause extra load on the filter (fluval 305)

i havent a tank to put the females in but i suppose this is essental if breeding occurs?

i could ask for male or females only until i'm more experienced but i'd rather be prepared.

any advice for necomer please? :(

I have bred mollies, platies, guppies and portholes and have never had a problem with fry being sucked up by the filter. Putting the female in a separate tank is one option; other options, if you want to save fry is to add lots of plants, including some floating ones, for them to hide in, or net the fry after birth and put them in a breeding trap for the first weeks or so. Tbh I am quite ok with the fact that only a percentage survive in my tanks, it's how nature intended it, and it is very easy to get overrun by fry.

thanks dwarfgourami - i'm creating a very heavily planted tank with the tetra substrate for plants and a top 1/8th gravel. i was hoping for the answer you have given - my tank would be able to preserve a small percentage of fry. this forum does mention the filter and fry and it was a concern.

do you sell or give your excess fry to lfs? is this common or do you use your fry to populate new aquariums - i couldnt bring myself to just hearling them out. :X

Use a piece of ladies stockings/tights over the intake if you are concerned about fry being sucked into filters.
