Just been given a 600L tank and am lost, what size of pump to I need, what filters, what kind of lighting, what's a good gravel, then the fish and plants, HELP

you need about 1w per L for the heater (if going tropical and not cold water)

not sure about the filter (mine generally come with the tanks) - but do you know about cycling the filter?

lighting is depending on what plants you want to grow. in general lights are only to see the fish (if plastic plants are used). if live plants are used you can get away with low lighting or high lighing depending on the plants you want to have

low light plants : include java fern, crypts, anubias, java moss + lots more
high light plants : anything red (as a general rule of thumb) HC, riccia - with high light plants you will need to dose fertilizer's and CO2

fish. decide on what fish you want. in a 600L tank i think your safe to get any type's of fish. theres a lot to chose from. some mix some dont. so research the ones you like the look of before you buy (and cycle your tank before you buy or your fish will die from ammonia build up)

as for gravel. depends on what fish you get and what plants you want to grow. alot of member use sand. argos play sand is cheap (£3 per bag). but it does need washing first. or you could buy gravel. the choice is down to you and what fish you want to keep

hope this helped a little, at the end of the day it all depends on what you want to keep in the tank.

What a tank to start with. A fish keepers dream, so many options. Will be great to see photos when up and running.

Wow, I am jealous, 600L tank to start with :hyper:

Good luck with it.
As for the filter, if I were you I would be getting at least two to be on the safe side, may be one internal, one external, if not 3 As for the capacity of them together, at least 10x water flow per hour would be good, which in your case is 6000L/hr.

As mike455555 said, I would choose the type/color of gravel well, as it is a pain to change it after. It does depend on the fish you are getting, but sand is a good idea as most bottom dwellers prefer it.

And make sure you cycle your tank before adding any fish. There is a lot of info here on the beginners forum how to do it, and I am certain a general internet search will give you a good idea. That's only presuming you've never done it before :)

If you find it hard and prefer a smaller tank, I can swap with you :hey:
