Hello, I recently just bought a tank ( around 147 litres) and we have only put the water in today. I was most likely wanting to get Guppies and Neon Tetras. I was hoping someone could tell me some other species that I could put in the tank and a recommended amount for each species. Also how long should I wait until I go to buy my fish. Thankyou! ( i will attach a picture, it was quite dirty then but we have put the filter in and removed the snails and its looking quite a bit better, if anyone has any suggestions for what else i need to add to it, it would be much appreciated.)

Before anything have a read of the cycling sections in the beginners area of the forum. This will give some advice as to what you need time do before adding fish.

Your tank is going to be little more than a large water container unless you bring your filter "to life". You see, the filter is as much of a living organsm as are the fish, and it needs to be established prior to adding any fish. The process used is known as cycling, and is a way of building up a healthy colony of beneficial bacteria. It isn't a quick process, but can be greatly speeded up by adding mature filter media from another tank, if someone will let you have some all the better. If you go into the beginners resource pages you will find all the info you need regarding cycling. Please understand that you need to be pateint and get it right from the off, that way you will be able to enjoy your new tank. Good luck.

I know what you mean lol. I HATE spelling mistakes, and no matter how often I proof read my replies before posting, I always seem to miss one. A bigger fone screen 2day, time for an upgrade at last.......joy!

sorry i only made an account on this today so i'm a bit lost, could you please give me a link to this page. Thanks!

When you open New Freshwater Tank from the homepage, scroll down 5 to the beginners resource centre

Off to a good start here with the advice above :)

Make sure you read through the fishless cycle as it really is the best start to the hobby - also if you mention it in shops most assistants wont have heard of it or play ignorant and advice against it because their store does not agree with it (various cynical reasons why not) but yeah 100% best way to start the hobby
