Like any other chart of this nature, I think it's useful -- to a point.
It generalizes to a fair degree (all tetras are implied to be identical, same with barbs, male and female bettas aren't distinguished, etc etc).
It may be useful as a quick reference, but I tend to rely more on my own observations, the observations and personal experience of other trusted fishkeepers I know, and research.
For instance, I'd do a lot more investigation if I were planning to mix fish which I suspected could be incompatible in a community tank.
