We all know the plant (poor picture) in the top photo.... It grows out of a ping pong ball sized bulb & sends runners up to the surface making leaves....

Now, I took this plant and put it in an outside pond.... 2nd Photo.... My cigarrette box shows the relevant size...

Obviously, as you can see, in my ouside guppy tank.

Looks like Nymphea Rubra to me.

Zenkeri red and Zenkeri green both have darker burgundy flecks on the leaves and their bulb is a more traditional round bottom and pointed top. Rubra comes from a bulb that looks like hashish or a small bit of wood!!!

Yes! Yes! Yes!.... No wonder it is SUPER sumptin....It has to be..??..?? Nymphea Rubra red ??, or Zinkeri Red, but since you know the plant,.... Can you actually believe that that are their leaves in the photo??.....

Mine looked exactly like that when I planted it in my tank (just not as big), at that point I cut it back because it was blocking out too much light from the other plants though, at that point it stopped growing properly and kept on sending up leaves that never quite made it to the surface and died back.

I took it out and kept in damp in the dark for a few months and have just planted it again a couple of days ago to see if it will do anything.

I think they just get leaves like that when they reach the surface, most people seem to like cutting them back for their submerged leaves, which I presume are quite demanding of CO2.

Aaron - I have a feeling that Oto was pregnant before the washing up liquid incident!!!

Ludwig - You will see in your original pic the difference in shape between the submerged leaves (pointed) and the ones that it sends up to the surface (rounded.)

When we use this plant in the aquarium it will every now and again send up a rounded leaf which is visibly round from the moment it sprouts. If you don't prune the plant back it eventually sends all it's leaves to the surface in this form. People who prune them back all the time can eventually get the plant to stop trying to reach for the skies. lol

three fingers - you wanna see the Nymphea Family blocking out light??? This scape (2 scapes ago now) has Rubra, Zenkeri Red, Zenkeri Green and also Nuphar Japonica and man it got dark after a while. lol
