Hi, I've joined the forum after deciding to get back into Tropical Fish keeping after an absence of about 30 years.

I'm intending to get a Fluval Roma 240. I want to have as natural an aquarium as possible.
One thing that has surprised and pleased me is how far things have moved on in the hobby since I was last involved.

Welcome back. There have indeed been a lot of changes. Despite prior experience it's well worth checking out the new keepers sections of the forum, there have been a lot of set up changes and I regretted a couple of minor decisions when I came back in after a gap because I hadn't realised that new stuff was out there.

back!

Wow, 30 years away from the hobby!

Be good to know what the changes are compared to 30 years ago.

Anyway, hope you enjoy the forum and good to have you on board!

30 years away is a long time! What made you want to get back into it?
Hope everything goes well!

Just the number of new species in the hobby alone during the last 30 years means you have a lot of fun stuff to read about. It's a good time to be getting back into it. Have fun!

Hi and thank you all for the very encouraging replies.

I always had trouble establishing as natural an aquarium as possible.
However, with all the information available on the internet and forums like this I hope to be more successful growing plants this time.

One reason for getting back into the hobby is that I retired some two years ago and have inspired by so many interesting videos on YouTube etc.

Really looking forward to getting going again and posting on this forum.

Regards,
Bill

Nature aquariums are a lot easier nowadays with the input of better CO2 sources and fertilisers. Plus the much wider availability of advice and variety of plants available.

Hi, since my last post I have a Seashell aquarium from Maidenhead Aquatics, 48"x24"x15" on a nice cabinet. I also have the Fluval 306 filter and T5 lights.
The substrate is from Aquaessentials, Colombo Flora-Base and Colombo Nutri-Base with a Dennerle heater cable running through it.
I've spent most of today setting it up and expect the plants from Aquaessentials to arrive tomorrow.
So I'm well on the way now!
I will then leave it to settle down for at least two weeks before putting the first fish in.

Hello there Bill...having you read the fishless cycling section. People don't tend to mature a filter using fish any more. Find the link to the beginners rescourse and find the cycling forum. It will help you understand it better xx. Good luck and welcome back

That sounds lovely, I can't wait to see some pics of it!

Have you read THIS yet? Waiting two weeks won't do anything except let it settle as you say. It'll be better for your future fish and will allow you time to work out a stocking plant and scape!

I'm back to fishkeeping after a 30 year gap, too. I treated myself to a 4ft Juwel tank setup as a retirement present to myself three years ago.
