Hey Guys i hope someone will be able to help.

This is one of my brothers goldfish, he has noticed Today a rather large (comparitively) white spot on the side of the fish, it is a Comet

He keeps the tank well and changes 30% ish of the water at weekend using a gravel syphon, and leaves the water to reach room temp before adding,

The tank is 2ft long and he only has 3 comets, it has a hang on azoo 300 filter and a single sponge filter and a tiny ehiem power head,

About 2 weeks ago he successfully treated another of the fish for a fungal infection, maybe a cut which went white and fluffy, with some velvet treatment and this cleared up in a couple of days,

Tbh it sounds like the fish are stressed, but we are not sure why.

It would be great if sombody could Id the spot for us asap, The picture is not the best but indicates the position and colour, the spot itself is rather like a human spot
it protrudes form the scales about 3mm and looks like it is growing from within and needs squeezing out, (apologies for slighlty gross description)
We guesed at early whitspot before it drops off but would like to be sure.

Kindest regards Darren and Paul

Sorry should have posted in coldwater, but was searching for similar symptoms in here,

Does the growth look quite solid in appearance (like a tumorous growth coming out of the flesh) or more fluffy in appearance like cotton growing on the skin of the fish or both?

many Thanks for reading,

It appears soft slightly fluffy towards the end, but we are sure it is growing, it seems to have grown outwars in a tubular form even in the last 5 mins, it is causing a swelling of the side of scales around the area,

The best way to explain it may be to say it looks like it is having a white poo from the side of its body

Behaving normally, gasping slightly more than other two not excessively

Many thanks

But yes on another inspection i would certainly say it appears to be growing from within.

From the description, i would say it is most likely Lymphocystis/Cauliflower Disease- see this link for pics and treatment of the desease;

http://www.fishpalace.org/Disease.html

It could also posibly be body fungus, but body fungus has a more more fluffy looking appearance- none the less though i would advise checking out the link above to see if their pics of body fungus look more similar to what your goldfish has :nod: .

You should definately test the water for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates as there could be water quality issues in the tank that have been left undetected which are the cause for these desease.
I do have to say though that 3 comet goldfish will outgrow a 2ft long tank for sure- these are really pond fish (they prefer the very cold tempertures and need a lot of space to thrive) and require large tank if they are to be kept an aquarium (i would say 70-80gallons minimum for 3comets)- they can grow to over a foot long given enough space. I myself keep comet and common goldfish in a 125gal tank and my largest comet is over 7inches long and is still growing. If you keep them in a tank too small, they will not live for very long and you are likely to experience more deseases in your fish, so upgrading to a much larger aquarium or finding a decent sized/depth pond for them to go in is important for their quality of life in the long run :nod: .

Thats great it looked very much like the forth picture along,

But It gets even more confusing..... The white lump has now fallen off, literally as i have been checking the link, now all that is left is the swelling in the same location
from the side you would not even know it had been there but from above you can see the swelling from the profile.

We treated the tank with the anti slime and velvet before posting the topic on the chance it was a fungal growth.

Do you think this may have helped and should we use any other treatment over the next couple of days if the swelling does not reduce in size/returns?

Yes you are quite right about the tank i (paul) have owned the fish about a year now, The two original were moved to our neigbours pond before the new guys arrived,
I think once these guys are moved on i will be ready to try somthing new!, But i have loved having them.

Thanks very much for your reply

Very much appreciated

Kindest regards Paul and Darren

Glad to help :) .
I think your best bet is to try the Acriflavin medication, they have quite a lot of it on ebay right now;

The growth could have been knocked off, but its likely the fish is still infected with the desease and it will return again at some point, so medicating the fish is still important. Comet goldfish are great fish, very friendly, attractive and inquistive goldfish- hope you find a good home for them once they have outgrown the tank or are near outgrowing the tank :good: .
