Both of my female swordtails are pregnant, i am sure they are both pregnant due to their gravid spots, one female is very large and has a large gravid spot on her. I expected her to have her babies a long time ago, she has been pregnant for nearly a month now and so is the other although she is no way near the size of the fattest one. The fattest once is in a breeding net and she doesn't look too stressed out, she is getting food, a water flow and the comfort of a couple of plants in with her aswell as the male and other female being outside of the breeding net... so basically my point is why has she not had her babies yet and what can i do to help her?
My water temperature :78 fahrenheit
Water quality: Not sure, need to put a water testing kit on my christmas list for santa :shout:

they give birth every 28-32 days so if u say a month they have been pregnant, could be any time soon.

good luck

The squareing off is the key i find as soon as they square off give or take a day or two and you will have your fry

In case you don't know, squaring off is when the shape of the female's abdomen changes, and she goes from looking round, fat and pregnant from behind to looking almost square. I also find that a reliable indicator with platies, which are so similar to swordtails that they can hybridise.

I had a platy once that looked like she had been inflated with a bike pump. I panicked. I isolated her, put her back, fretted, annoyed the people in the LFS. She dropped a week later than I first thought 'today must be the day' and there were 85 fry in her, which is a very large drop for a platy.
