Update - just had to kill one of my platys.... Had a group of six they were great little fish probably my favourite. The platy in question was in a bad way, the fungus was literally covering her whole body. It looked close to death and was on its own more or less on the gravel and not swimming.

So that's two fish dead today. I dread to think what tomorrow will bring. On a positive note I start protozin dosage tomorrow so hoping that will sort it.

Just a side issue I am hoping someone can help me with. I have noticed some of the decorative wood in the aquarium has started growing this white fungus now. What would you suggest? I was thinking leave it in the tank and dose it with the fish or just bin it?

Thanks

I haven't seen your fish so I can't be sure but your fish don't seem to have what protozin normally helps with

Protozin seems to be a "catch all" all purpose treatment as far as I can see. Certainly appears to be the recommendation from the aquarium enthusiasts I have spoken to. An update from this morning - the fish seem a hundred times better!! The rainbows in particular look like new fish swimming and playing. I did a 25% water change yesterday and have added the carbon pad. There are still white marks on a couple of fish but much better than previous. I am still minded to use the protozin treatment as there is probably still a bacteria hanging about so won't harm to treat the tank.

Protozin is dosed on days 1,2,3 and 6. It increases in concentration in the tank over those 6 days, it does not rapidly decompose.

If the 25% water change was done after you started Protozin treatment, you have weakened the concentrations of active meds in the tank.

If you are still dosing Protozin, you should not be adding a new active carbon pad that will adsorb the medication.

Maybe I've read it wrong, but I do not get the impression you have finished a full 6 day course of Protozin treatment?

Yeah I have not even started the protozin treatment yet. Did a water change yesterday in preparation and put the carbon back in following an aborted attempt with the interpet meds. Another water change tonight and then day one of protozin will commence.

First dose of protozin in. Lost another rainbow beforehand so that is three fatalities in two days. Now hoping that is the end and I can sort out this problem once and for all!!

Update - been approx 20 hours since first protozin dose. Woke up this morning and all white fungus had disappeared from the wood in the tank. The two previously sluggish rainbows are flying about the tank and eating. All five platys look great. I fact, everything looks much better!! Will continue with the treatment as per the instructions but so far so good!!

Update - second dose of protozin added. Fish seem fine, with the lights on it looks like the five platys "bottom lip" is white. Might be my imagination or it might be the dye from the meds. Hope it is not fungus!!

Update - so three doses of protozin completed - half way through. No further deaths and the fish seem to be responding well. Only cause for concern is one of the platys which has some white fungus on its side. Hoping the meds will clear this up!
