How do surrounding colors play a part in the coloration of fish? Is it dark (ie black gravel and black background) makes colors more dull? And bright surroundings make the colors brighter?

Or does the surroundings not matter and its more to do w/ water quality, temp, breeding season, and dominance?

Breeding season is when there colors are on full blast. They are also when you feed them their favorite food. It also depends on what colours of the fish contreast with the gravel. All colors except for black seem alot brighter on black gravel. That is about all i know becasue it is too early in the morning.

All this is true... but I'm going to finish the thought you had about the gravel...
:p

Like they said, darker fish don't hsow well on darker gravel, so for a lighter fish, use a darker gravel, for darker fish use a lighter gravel. This will help to pronounce their colors greatly. Alsom make sure hte fish is happy, their colors won't show and usually that means something is a bit off in the tank.

Most of the time, it just comes down to color of the substrate you use and if it contrastswith the fish colors ot make them stand out. :good:

The fish wont themselves change colour depending on the surroundings (assuming they are happy with it), but its just how we ourselves persieve the fish.

Temperature (as long as they are happy with it) makes no real difference.
Dominance does. The most dominant fish will display the boldest colouring, the subordinates wont.
Breeding can, depending on the fish. Cichlids will change colour, many others wont though.

If the fish are not happy, they will display dull colours.

What fish did you have in mind?

Well, I was asking because my white oscar is on white sand. He wasn't cared for properly before cause since I've had him a whole lotta color has started to show, but of course we want the fish colors to show the best.

If you can, put him on black sand or osmething really dark like that, he'll pop out a bit more and be more visable and his colors will be enhanced. Colro contrast is key in this situation. If he's getting his color back, after you got them for mabuse, then you are doing a great job. The change in sand will make him look even nicer for you :good:
