All my tanks have the smooth natural river small substrate gravel, but for my son's tank, he chose purple rocks. I was hesitant to add those to the tank, but agreed. . .now, anyone think that the dyes from the rocks could harm the betta?

I'm going to switch his gravel out tomorrow (can't do it today as I already did a 100% water change and don't want to stress him).

I won't be using colored rocks again. . .

Thoughts?

Thanks.

As long as you bought it from a fish shop then it should be safe!

I find the more polished-looking colored subtrates (like marineland's line) give off kind of a weird smell... they've definitely got some chemicals going on there. I had some for my betta's bowl and for the first few weeks you could smell the glaze or whatever it is at every water change. Never harmed him though so you should be just fine.

There was a flurry of concern over bright blue substrates at some point before I joined, but never purple ones that I know of. I can't remember what the concern about blue substrate was though...
