CO2

In particular, carbon is the main 'building block' of plant cells, and plants can easily use the carbon in CO2 for growth.

As far as "how do you use it", the short answer is you need to dissolve gaseous CO2 in the tank's water. There are several different ways people do this, but they all sort of focus on one or both of these two ideas: "Make the bubbles as small as possible" and "maximize the amount of time the bubbles are in the water".

If you'd like to know the mechanisms used, a quick search on "DIY CO2", "CO2 diffuser" and "CO2 reactor" should yield some good results.
