Hi,

What type of co2 is required when refilling my cannister,
And anyone know of local places in Northwood/Harrow etc...
I'm dangerously low now :(
thanks in advance

Try your local Maidenhead Aquatics they normally refill JBL cylinders. If not, get a fire extinguisher, ultra cheap compared to 500g cylinders. Just search on ebay, the shop I use is 123safer4u, lots of people use them. Get two, so you have a spare next time ;) I've just ordered 4!

I did think about the whole fire extinguisher thing,
I can get some from work theres a few kicking about ( that aint in use :p )

how do I determine if my Regulator will work?
and do maiden head do refill?
my closest is in enfield and its a Sod to get to :p

Regs, cylinders, etc all have standard size threads, I've yet to find a reg/cylinder combination that doesn't fit, even the old JBL regs can be adapted to fit FE's. So you should be OK. You dont need to worry about refilling, unless you have a local fire place that will do it, they are almost as cheap to just buy new each time. That's what I do, would be better to get a refill if possible, but at £25 for a 2kg FE any refill place would have to be cheap to make it worth while.

when you say local fire place you mean somewhere that deals with safety etc..?

Im am eyeing up the 2kg as if I buy 2x then I can swap and change as needed and then recycle them,
500g has lasted me about 6months to would last a while.

when I said my old regulator be okay I mean pressure wise :)

and your proving to be helpfull as allways :)

Will this do? Is the Co2 suitable for aquariums from these?

Yeh your local fire extinguisher/safety shop. Avoid places like Boc and Chubb as they'll charge you rental AND for refills and are stupidly expensive.

Good idea to get 2 cylinders, as you say you're then never without a spare :) I recently ordered a job lot of 4 FE's so I have plenty should I need it.

I'm sure the old reg should be fine, they are designed to cope with very high pressures. If you're worried do it carefully!

That FE you linked to would be ok, but there are cheaper ones on ebay, this is cheapest place Ive found so far

EDIT - are you able to post a pic of the reg?

This is what I have

Really cant thank you enough for your info,
i'm going to have a search for locals that can refill me,

I always thought there were certain grades if Co2 that are not suitable for Aquariums :/

I have two of those regs, will fit FE's no probs :)

I believe there are different grades of CO2, based on the concentration in the cylinder and their use (medical, food, etc), but I've never really bothered to look into it as it makes little difference in the aquarium :)

Happy to help :)

They are not different grades of CO2 per say. Most CO2 will be 99% pure co2.

The different is the actual cylinder or container the CO2 comes in.

Fire extinguisher etc are just Iron or an Alloy containing iron. So the inside of the container can corrode slightly so you end up with a small (and i mean small trace) amount of Iron oxide within the CO2. So small its undetectiable almost.

CO2 specifically labelled for food has the inside of the container coated in glass to prevent this. Also when supplying CO2 the supplier must disinfect Food grade cylinders before ever re-fill. Hence the higher cost.

Like Themuleous said this makes no difference i an aquarium. Just get the cheaper bottle. :good:
