ok well im creating a DIY Co2 injector. i have a 591ml pop bottle with tubing and an airstone. I heard that yeast and sugar is a mixture but i can't find yeast anywhere. is there any other mixtures that would work??

Thanks,

you can't find yeast??? :S

check your grocery store. 100% they have it. if they don't have it.. something is wrong with your grocery store :p

yeah man, you should find yeast very easily.

i use this method. you just need sugar (i used dextrose as i have heaps from homebrewing beer, but normal sugar will do) and unflavoured gelatin (grocery store will have this too) and yeast.

Add 2 packs (4 serving size) of gelatin into an empty clean 2L soda bottle.
Add 2 cups of boiling water and mix so that the jello fully disolves.
Add 2 cups of sugar and mix the solution again to disolve the sugar.
Add 2 cups of cold water and mix the solution again.
Store in the refrigerator overnight or until jello sets.
The next day, add one cup of room temperature water.
Add 1/4 TSP of yeast and a pinch of baking soda.
Cap the bottle and wait for it to go...

The sugar yeast method lasts about 2 weeks...
this lasts about 4-5 weeks for most people

Yeast needs temps of 15-28 degrees Centegrade to work. too hot and it will die, too cold and it will not work.

Madcow, whats the gelatin for?

I believe the theory is that you use a gelatine and sugar mix (jelly) in place of just normal granulated sugar, then add your warm water and yeast to the bottle. The jelly mix slows down the yeasts accesss to the sugar and in theory makes your diy Co2 mix last much longer between having to change the mix.

I saw a similar gelatin mix online somewhere and gave it a try once. It did seem to work, but what I saw was a much slower release of CO2 into the tank over a period of about 21 days. This gave lower CO2 levels in my tank. 2 x 2ltr bottles may have given me a CO2 reading closer to the 2 x nutrafin canisters I used on that tank, so I only tried that method once.

Madcow seems to have found that

My normal yeast gives a good steady output for about a week, it lasts longer, but output drops drastically and the gelatin method gave a steady output for 3 weeks rather than 4-5 .... but I'm sure it all depends on your mix, ambient temperature and tank size.

Also once the mix is used up, you need to throw the bottle away as it is filled with  after the yeast eats/digests the jelly

Changing a sugar/yeast mix once per week takes 5 mins, where as with the gelatin mix you need to make the bottles up in advance to let it set. Obviously as you need to make the mix up at least a day in advance, you couldn't really do this in a nutrafin canister .... unless you had spares !

For me it turned out to be more work for less CO2, but it did last a longer period of time than my normal mix.

Holiday Tip :
However if I was still using DIY CO2 I would certainly connect up 2 gelatin mix bottles into a tank to cover holiday periods if I was going to be away for over a week !

I read somewhere that adding protein helps. Milk powder was what was suggested. I've been adding a small amount of slim fast and it seems to even out the CO2 production.

When i used just sugar/yeast/bicarb the CO2 would peak and then die off. Using slim fast it seems to be more steady, but slower

Mr G has it right. the gelatin mix is great. you dont need to leave it overnight. it sets in a hour in the fridge!

i run a 2ltr soft drink bottle with the gelatin mixture and also have a Red Sea CO2 bottle with normal dextrose/yeast mix running at the same time. Both running thru the Red Sea difuser. it works really well.

another thing you could add is molasses or golden syrup or something. i guess the thicker it is the longer it lasts!? although it would not be as cheap.

having the gelatin mix last for several weeks is great. i do have to change the 1 ltr Red Sea bottle once a fortnight but ive always got some CO2 pumping in.

now i just need to et my dads still so i can make something usefull out of all the booze!

hugh

ahh in before my (not so quick) edit. lol

yes!! i want to start distilling the booze!! can make ethanol and add some absinthe essence.

hehehe

ok the Co2 is up and running! i did a mixture of a teaspoon yeast and a cup sugar in more then just under the label of the bottle and after 30 minutes its working great! im seeing 4-5 bubbles a seacond!! the foam has come up a bit and is an inch from the cap. is this something i should worry about? i don't have an overflow bottle attached. thanks

flogged the pic from AGA forum

use a 2 ltr bottle and only use half of it. that way it has plenty of room to bubble away.
