I feel like a complete idiot... I need to be smacked HARD with the Idiot's Guide to Fish. *sigh* :/

Everyone learns from their mistakes. As far as upping the Ph, you can add a lava rock. It made mine jump, though my Ph is usually around 8.0 anyway.

I dont want to add anymore items, the tank is just about cramped as it is. I dont want to take away anymore room. but someone suggested a pH up, which I should get

Even a small piece would help. I personally don't like using the chemicals since it's not very "natural". You really don't want to use alot of chemicals to maintain the Ph.

I'll have to see if the petshop that carried the live rocks has lava rocks. live rocks are hard to find around here as it is. I'll see what I can do, thanks :D

Dont get disheartened, we all know that when people enter the hobby for the first time they put their trust with the shop that gives them the advice. I am sorry to say that i have seenthis many times, a shop will seel a totally unsuitable fish knowing full well that problem will occur downthe line. Thisis not your fault of course, then you come on here and ask some basic question and get fired at fromall angles for keeping unsuitable fish :*) None of us are having a dig at you but many of us are passionate about the welfare of these animals (like yourself i am sure from what i have read) so if you see a highly charged reply thendont take it personally.

What must be doe now though is to try and reduce the damamge that is liekly to happen in the future. Do you have any pictures of the tank so we can see the size of it and the size of the fish? Is it possible to find a 30 or 40 gallon tank that you can upgrade to for a about 6 months? this will help considerably. As mentioned, you will need a large puddle of water for tangs, the others you could get away with a smaller capacity. If you could exchange the tang for a Cherub angel or something it would ease the stress considerably. Lastly, remember to think long in advance. If you want a larger tank then remember that with more water comes more live rock, this is probably the killer blowon the cpacity of most peoples budgets. For a 100 gallon tank you will need some serious cash to kit it out with live rock  Make sure you have these funds on place before you go and get a tank with fish then find you cannot afford the filtration for them.

I hope a solution can be found soon to this problem, ifi lived anywhere near you i would lend you a 30 gallon myself whilst you were upgrading :-(

Better than laval rock is Aragonite sand. a vrey very good buffer for PH. Is it possible to get aragonite?

yeah, aragonite is a great buffer(that's what my substrate is). if you can't do that, I would
suggest seachem P.H. buffer.

Off to the petshop I go to get some form of natural pH riser..

wish me luck in trying to exchange the fish

the petshop said moonstone is better than lava rock.. so I got one of those. I took away a few regular rocks from the tank to save room. moon stone's good,r ight?

I have seen moonstone in my lfs and it looks fairly porous. I cant comment on it being good or bad however as i have never use it or know anyone who has it.

well, if anyone else reads this, I'd like their imput on the moonrock. the pH is alittle over 8.0, so thats good.. could be higher, right?

My PH is 8.2
You can operate a tank with a PH of 8.0 but it gives little rom for error. I would try and raise it slightly if possible
