hi guys iv got 3 clown loach and one has allways been a bit shyer than the others, hides alot etc , i come home yesterday to find him floating in the tank (still alive tho) so i put him in a floating box with a bit of food as he dont look like he has eaten for ages(silly thin).its been bout 24hrs and hes still not moved etc but is still alive, id rather not lose him so any sugestions????????
thanks dan

Put him back in the tank or into a quarentine tank with a cycled/seeded filter where he wont be exposed to toxic levels of ammonia.

And try him with something like live bloodworm or frozen bloodworm, preferably soaked in garlic juice.

Chances are it's not a lack of eating that's caused this, more that an illness has caused his lack of eating which has then made him very thin and made him even more ill.
Others will be able to help better with regards to trying to diagnose what the cause of the weight loss is, but I would imagine he's not moving cause he just doesn't have any energy. So trying the tastiest foods you can find would be a good start. Just don't let it rot in a little tub with him otherwise you are likely to just make things worse.

hi mate thanks for the tip , iv feed all the fish withsome freeze dried blood worm and daphnia and brine shrimp all mixed up,not to much tho , he is still in the tank but in a floating birth trap thing! i think my red tail shark would take advantage if i put him in ????

Hmm. If hes unable to swim then I wouldnt put him back in the tank, the other clown loache's will probably just try and eat him. I had a dieing angelfish, that stopped being able to swim, and one of my clown loaches tried to eat it alive, and actually did a bit of damage until i put the angelfish into a breeder net.

I agree if he's in a breeder trap. I thought he was literally in a box... like a magerine tub or something. But yeah if he's in a breeder trap that's better than him being open to possible bullying.

well hes eaten a little and can swim but just wont . he keeps lieing down in a curled up position but is still breathing so i will see how he gets on and keep ya informed! thanks all

hi guys the loach died today,he lasted a few days, bit guttered but not sure y he stoped eating in the 1st place tho.

Their fins lock up when they're sick and on the way out.(I've never got one to come out of fin lock ever. I put one to sleep who had that once to keep it from suffering) I've had 3 at a time in the past and it ended up that they all died except one.. and then that one would eventually die too. They are very very hard to keep. They're so tiny when they're in stores but yet they've already travelled thousands of miles to get there since they can't be bred in captivity--at least they couldn't the last time I heard. A guy who owns a fish store told me they stand a better chance if you can get them when they're at least 3 inches long.

I have one now who's the remainder of 3 that I had. In truth, I think they kill off the other ones by taking all the food and by stressing and dominating them. I think you have to have them in larger quantities like over 6 or so or just have one at a time, eliminating the competition.

They are VERY sensitive to ammonia so you have to watch the levels in your tank and keep it clean especially if you have alot of other fish in there. You cannot have any salt in the water because they don't have scales. You have to have a good place for them to hide and they like to eat plants alot or just slices of cucumber or zucchini too. I feed mine frozen bloodworms every day. She's getting big!

They are long lived if you can get them to live long.. They can grow to be a foot long too. I have a tank now that I've not replaced the fish in when they die. The Loach is really prospering in that situation with only 2 cory cats and one plec. Hope this helps
