i did a huge water change the other day as new wood made it all brown and horrible which seems to have done some good as since then nitrite and ammonia are now all gone nearly 12 hours :D
only thing is tho, the water is getting really cloudy and already i can barely see to the back of the tank. ive read a few times that the tank will get a bit 'gunky', my plants have brown stuff all over em but i found it strange that the water seems at its worse when the cycle is coming towards the end. is that normal?

ah i havent read that before but it makes sense :D i have a dead plant in there which has started to grow again (or its not quite dead at the bottom) but i thought it might just rot away naturally and filter away and do whatever rotted plants do. which apparently can cause a bacterial bloom :X will oink it out later and do a water change, plan on getting a gravel vac anyway so looks like i just be getting it sooner than i had planned. no big deal.

thanks :hyper:

To be honest you NEVER want anything that is rotting in your tank, whether that be dead plant, dead fish, or excess food, they'll all effect your water quality, or at the very least cause you to have to clean your filter more often! :p

changed 50% water, removed all dead plant matter and wiped the glass down,an hour later and its a lot better already :)

will gravel vac and clean filter before i get the fish but gonna give it another week.

if u buy a powerhead it should settle down quicker.

A power head is a pump that is separate from the filter's pump. It is used to improve water circulation in a tank or can be used to move water through filters that don't have a pump of their own.

Edit: Add a picture of a power head.

ahh i see.

moving off topic slightly, the bit where the water comes out of appears to have a bit where you can connect an airline to it? (closer to the body, points up towards the surface). Is it for an airline as i have the same thing on my pump?

thanks :)

Sounds like it's for a spray bar attachment ...

To get the water flow better on my tank i brought a cheap fluval 2 internal filter and stuck it at the other end of the tank , helps the filteration and helps move the water.

On that pump, there is an air line connection. You are quite right. The square looking nozzle has a fan shaped piece that can go on it to distribute the flow better. It also comes with a suction cup mounting system so that it can be placed where wanted in the tank.
