Cloudy Water After Incident

Hi there.

About two weeks ago, i woke to find two of my fish (1 pseudotropheus Demasoni, and 1 yellow lab) dead at the bottom of my tank, The tank seemed healthy put i took in A sample to my LFS for safe keeping and to my disbelief he says
"You have no bacteria in your tank" . . .Strange seeing as this tank has been up and running for a fair few months now (4 to be exact) and he carries on by saying
"We are having this problem alot lately, United utilities are cleaning the pipes with a chemical that is destroying the Ph in the water thus Destroying ALL the good bacteria in the tank". Even they could not do any further water changes because of this. So now i have a tank of fish, which now needs to be cycled, with chichlids in (not being the hardiest of fish) all over again. So far i have the phback up to 6.5-7.0 and amonia at around 2.4 which usually means amonia is not toxic to the fish.

Now heres my question, the water has become cloudy again, is this due ti entering the nitrogen phase?

One suggestion, are you able to get some bottled water that you could do a water change with and what size is the tank?

size is 3 foot tank

Just carried out my water checks,

Amonia 2.2
Nitrite 0.3
Nitrate 5.0
Ph 6.5

The cloudiness is most likely due to the bacteri bloom normally in new tanks if it is having to cycle all over again.
W/C would be like normaly thing to do but obviously you don't want to use the tap water!! Bottled water or any pure water might work?

Yeah was thinking the bottled water solution, Ill have to have a visit to tesco then pick some up. What we thinking about 40% Change for the first? 15 % every few days after?

When I had a high ammonia prob in my first tank I had a routine reccommened of 1st day 50%, 2nd day 10%, 3rd day 40%, 4th 10%, etc I dont know how effective that is over others but it worked for me!

If you have not got some already, get some Seachem Prime, will cost you ~£12 for a 500ml bottle. You can overdose by upto 5x the standard 5ml per 200l, in order to detoxify ammonia/nitrite/nitrate. At least this will buy you some time while tap water changes are not practical.

Minimal feeding (say every other day), ought to buy you some more time for the tap water to become safe again, lowering fish waste and its contained ammonia.


If that 2.4 ammonia reading is mg/l, the standard measurement units, that tank water is extremely toxic right now.

just on with the wster changes now, i meant 1.2 not 2.2 sprry for the scare tactics. What stage of the cycle would you say im at? so current scores are:

Ammonia 1.2
Nitrate 5.0
Nitrite 0.3
Ph 6.7
Temperature 26
