Set up my tank 2 months ago, used Interpet New aquarium start up kit. Added 5 zebra danios, everything ok, added another 5 danios a week later, started to get build up of algae on rocks End of tank does get direct sunlight in afternoon. Added a bulldog plec. Tank has been stable for 5 weeks, then noticed what appeared to be fungal infection on mouth of one fish, possibly starting on others. Dosed with Interpet finrot and fungal treatment. Problem seems to have cleared up. On adding fungal treatnent bubbles from aereator seened to get smaller, cloudy rather than stream of bubbles, could this product affect surface tension? Next day there was increased opacity, same the following day but seemed better on next day. Tonight when I got home could hardly see back o tank, white opaciticy. Bacterial bloom? I may have been over feeding.
I did a 50% water change, added accuclear. Clarity has improved, possibly more than can be attributed to 50% water change so looks like accuclear is working. All fish seem healthy enough.
What's gone wrong?, Did I take right action? What action next? Daily 10% water change until things clear up? Any advice appreciated.

Hi Totaig and :hi: to TFF,

To give us a better background so we can help you more, can you please answer the following questions:-

1. Do you have a water test kit?

2. If yes, what are your results for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH?

3. Do you have a filter? If so, which one, and do you ever switch it off?

3. Did you cycle the filter? or Do you know what cycling the filter is?

4. How often do you feed the fish? Is there usually food left lying around the tank after feeding?

5. What size is the tank?

6. How often do you do water changes, and how much do you change? Do you vaccum the substrate?

7. Other than Accuclear, what chemical additives do you use in your tank?

With the answers to these questions, we will be better armed to diagnose your problem.

Cheers :good:

1. Do you have a water test kit? Individual kits for pH, nitrite and nitrate. Will get ammonia test kit today.

2. If yes, what are your results for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH? pH 6.4, zero for both nitrate and nitrite.

3. Do you have a filter? If so, which one, and do you ever switch it off? Fluval, not sure of model, aquired tank and filter from a friend. Don't switch it off.

3. Did you cycle the filter? or Do you know what cycling the filter is? Interpet New aquarium start up kit contained start up culture and nitrite test, I've never seen a build up in nitrite. I've closely followed instructions with start up kit, feel that I've stocked with a low number of hardy fish and assumed the tank was cycled.

4. How often do you feed the fish? Is there usually food left lying around the tank after feeding? Couple of times in the evening, probably been over doing it this week, some of the second feed isn't quickly eaten.

5. What size is the tank? 110 litres

6. How often do you do water changes, and how much do you change? Do you vaccum the substrate? 10-15% once a week and I vaccum the substrate.

7. Other than Accuclear, what chemical additives do you use in your tank? Interpet New aquarium start up kit contained dechlorinator, I treat fresh water with this when doing water changes. Interpet finrot and fungal treatment last weekend.
