I have a new tank and now have fish in it, but it is turning cloudy and I was wondering if this is normal or is there something I am doing wrong?

Hi JP4265 and :hi: to the boards,

A newly set up tank going cloudy isn't uncommon. It's most likely a bacterial bloom which is nothing to worry about. It will clear in its own time.

Unfortunately, this part of the forum is really for scientific discussion, not beginner questions, and this topic will probably be moved when a moderator spots it. Start a new topic in the 'New to the Hobby' section, and i'll be glad to help you further.

Cheers :good:

What color is the cloudiness? It could be a few things, but BTT's probably right, bacterial blooms are common and all you really can do is wait it out. I tried doing water changes to clear one once, and it just clouded up the new water as quickly as I could add it.

Your tank is beginning to cycle (building good bacteria). This is unavoidable with new tanks and it is very harmful for your fish.

I see the thread has now been moved. Thanks Mods. :D

Are you new to the hobby? Do you know about cycling a filter? This is crucial to understand what you need to do to keep your fish alive and healthy, and will help you understand what a bacterial bloom is.

I won't go into it any further at the moment in case you already know.

Cheers :good:
