Hmmmm

I must admit the sound they make is very loud - I can sometimes hear mine in bed and my tank is downstairs

But I havent heard of them hurting other inhabitants and I know quite a few people who keep them

im hoping to find out what it is soooon before it drives me insane :p

Because many pistol shrimp species only use thier claws for defense and don't actively hunt for food. There are a few (sorry I dont know which ones) which are far more predacious than their scavenger cousins though, and these can and have harmed other livestock in tanks.

To the OP, also remember, pistol shrimps can be as small as a fingernail or as large as a cleaner shrimp... IF you in fact do have a pistol shrimp, it may be the exceptionally small variety and very difficult to find. If you ever dive on a reef in the ocean and really listen, you'll hear a constant din of pistol shrimp clicking.

they seem to be very interesting to research on, i love this hobby because its something that we dont know everything about, we are all always learning something new.

yep theres some interesting little critters about, i hope one day to find out what it is! deffinetetly sounds like how a pistol shrimp sounds though ... just may be a mini one as ski said !

As an aside, after buying some LR a few months ago I get something making a clicking sound in my tank during feeding time... Whatever's doing it it lives in the back right corner of my tank, at least thats where it sounds loudest. I've never seen a pistol/mantis shrimp, and no mysteriously dissappearing fish/inverts for months now. *shrug*
