So I got these three bits of bogwood, two smaller and one large and soaked them all for a fortnight after which the two small ones had stopped leaching brown but the big one was still doing so. I add the two small bits and waited another ten days before putting the big one in. A week later (after being away from the tank) and I have distinctly tea coloured water. (damn it)

What's my plan of action? Multiple 25% water changes over the coming weeks? Will carbon get rid of the brown?

Any advice much welcomed.

Best,
Crowntail

p.s. I've forgotten my old password so I'm not quite as much of a newbie as this post my suggest though I recognise that this is a pretty rookie error!

A few water changes will help over a few weeks, as Im sure you know, it wont bother the fish at all - its just annoying for us to look at.

You could try to add some filter floss to your filter and that might help a bit :)

many large water changes is the only way....
i had a piece of wood that leached for months. i just got used to it and the colour slowly faded over time...

Carbon in the filter will indeed help remove the stain. but i would advise using it in a separate filter, as it needs changed quite often. but if you can live with the colour, the fish will not suffer, and very probably, benefit from the tannins.

Had a similar problem with my small tank, only thing that cleaned it was activated carbon and lots of water changes!

I put bogwood in water for just 1 day and put it in the tank and it didn't go brown at all. Weird lol

yeh, i found that Mapani caused more colouration than the bogwood did. and i only wash and then soak them for a couple of hours!
