Clearer/cleaner Water ?

I'm due to clean my external filter out soon. I am thinking of either adding an 'extra' course blue sponge and/or an extra fine white sponge. Do you think this will improve water clarity? Will there be any side effects/running problems? I have currently got all my baskets and sponges set up as it says in the instruction booklet. The filter has been running nearly 6 years now.

I have a thin polishing layer in my Eheim (extra fine sponge right before water goes back into the tank) which works very well to remove fine particles. Also, because the intention of the polishing sponge is not for bacteria (and it does not take up any room in the filter, really), it is normally safe to replace it with a new layer every time you clean the filter.

You could always try some Filter Aid always works a treat for me.

Alternatively, you could use a product called Filter Aid which you add to your water column. Filter aid causes smaller particles of dirt to stick together therefore when they pass through your filter they are removed, rather than being put back into the water column.
