Clear / White Stringy Poo?

It can be due to a number of things:

parasites

bacterial infection

sheer stress (I've had platies do it after a filter disaster for instance, but then be fine once things had settled down)

But if yours seems bloated and otherwise unwell, I would suspect one of the former. Isolate (if you possibly can) and see about treating- I try treating for parasites, if that doesn't work, clear the medication out of the tank (with carbon filter), then try internal bacteria.

I am having the same trouble with one of my dwarf platys, however, the fish is not bloated. As a matter of fact I was noticing that she looks sleeker than she has in the past and she finally looks like she is growing. She is a bit listless though, not really bad, but not as active. Otherwise color, skin, eyes and all look great.

How do they get parasites or a bacterial infection when there are no changes in the tank? Other than a water change of course. Just curious as I'm pretty new to this and everything has been going great for the past three or four months.

Thanks, Debra

I don't actually have the means to isolate the fish as my breeder net is currently home to 3 Platy fry and I have no other tank. I've only spotted the 'clear poo' on one occasion but was just surprised to see it I suppose so thought it worth asking. I treated the tank 2 weeks ago with a course of Myaxzin (Wilder recommended it on here after one of my other platys died) and the week previous to that I had given the tank a course of Protozin (after my german ram had died). So I'm hoping that I don't have bacteria infections or parasites and that the fish was simply stressed. I'll keep my eye on things. Thanks

Yes i agree it can mean internal parasites, bacteria infection, but i would go with constipation for now if the fish is on to many dried foods, what do you feed the fish.

twice a week I feed frozen brine shrimp, daphnia or bloodworm. I put peas in once a week and then feed the Tetramin Flakes and Tetraminn crisps the other days. I put pellets in for my catfish twice to three times a week in a addition and the platys and tetras seem to like those too. I thought I was giving them quite a varied diet?

Sometimes I've noticed that the poo is clear but then has dark bits at sporadic intervals, bit like a string of sausages. This is the same for a few of my fish. I've not worried really because the next day their poo is completely normal and they all seem happy and healthy enough. Should I be worried?

Don't like he sound of clear poo as that can be a sign of internal parasites, just keep a close eye on them.
Check the anus to see if it looks enlarged more than normal, and see if it looks red.

The anus of my yellow platy does look slightly enlarged but she gave birth to her fry a few hours ago so I'm guessing that's the reason. The others don't look anything out of the ordinary. Is it safe to give them another dose of myaxzin (2 weeks after the last dose) when I have fry in the breeder net? I have no way of isolating the babies or suspect poo fish
