I am buying a few more fish for my tank tomorrow and just wondering what do people do with regards to cleaning the tank do you do it before the new fish are added in or do you do it after? I am planning to add them in the morning and then when the stress and everything has calmed down and worn off I will do a water change and clean the substrate but what do you think is best?

I think after on the basis that I will be adding the water from the fish shop (it is a reputable one with the sole purpose of selling fish and before I bought anything I visited a few times and looked at their fish they were always colourful lively and I never once saw a dead fish or a poorly looking fish in the water unlike some of the other places I scoped out) as I feel it is less stressful to gently tip them out after acclimatising then it is to net them out of the bag they swim out job done.

All my tests have come back as negative, no ammonia, nitrate or nitrite so I am happy with that so cleaning, before or after buying fish?

I believe you are'nt meant to add fish shop water to your tank, due to the risk of disease and infection that it may bring

Yep clean tonight before you purchase. Once you put the new ones in you don't want to further stress them for at least a few days while they settle in.

Dont add any water from the fish shop net the fish from the bag you don't want to risk adding any contaminated water.

Is it not much more stressful on the fish to be netted out of the bags though then to add the water with them? There seems to be two schools of thought on this, I am still a curious soul on these matters so like to know what peoples reasoning for netting them out rather then adding the water in?

Dont add any water from the fish shop net the fish from the bag you don't want to risk adding any contaminated water.

Ahh excellent folks just away to fill up a bucket to get it up to temp and treat it before I take water out Then will do a change old water into mop bucket

Whoops been doing it wrong up till now will change my method and get a smaller net

you dont even really need to net them into the tank... what I do is use a bucket and drain the bagwater into the bucket and then plop the fish in without any need for a net!

I'd never thought of that, very good indeed

only problem is that it doesnt always work with Kuhli loaches, they can squeeze through pretty much anything lol

Oh thats a super idea I will give it a go.

Now I need to work out what to buy I am in two minds, I can only buy 4 as I have 4 fish and I have been told you can only ever add the maximum of what you have, tank has no algae so not time for a plec yet as I have also been told not to add those until you can see some algae?? Ahhh the fun of fish keeping!!

and yes, you can only add the same amount of stock to your sank you already have (bear in mind, adding 4 huge fish wont doo here, they have to be of similar size)
