Hi there

Ok last night whilst gazing at my tank...ya know as ya do...I noticed a little orange speck and I mean very little, moving about the tank....saw it was a platy fry as I had recently moved a pregnant female into an all female tank...I managed to catch it and place it in a breeder net.....spent the next hour or so catching a few more (I didn't want loads as I have enough fry already). I stopped at 8.

They are in a breeder net at the moment, and I am wondering how I can keep it clean? They are so small I dare not put them in a trap as I thought they may beable to slip through the holes at the bottom..I am doing water changes.

I have experience with molly fry and had them in a trap for a few days with them being bigger. but these platy fry are minute....I have had platy fry before but when I caught them they must have been a week or so old as they were at least 4 times the size of the ones I have at the moment....so......... after going round the houses to ask a simple question?

How do I keep the net clean? When I had the molly fry in the trap I used to take the trap out and clean it after putting the fry in a bucket...but with these guys being so small I have no chance of doing that?

Damn that was a long topic for what will probably be a simple answer...if I get one at all? :D

I had a small thin tube where I held my finger over one end and then let go when it was above the organic waste to suck it up and take it out.

This shouldn't take long and is easy to do.

the breeding net is designed to allow water to flow through it from all angles. It shouldn't get very dirty.
When you do water changes on the tank just lower the water level down so the net is still partially in water. then refill the tank.

Algae grows all over mine - I have two and rotate them. When it's off, I soak it in a weak solution of simazine. Seems to work.

hia, debbs, are those kids giving you trouble already lol??

i have the same in my net,its full of furry stuff i lifted the net and put it back into hoping to rinse it, but that jut stirred it up,but like colin says they are nets so are having a flow thru then,so should be ok, theres no way im putting any tubing in mine as im blind as a bat, i did the floor of the main tank ( very carefully) but im just hoping that it will be ok with reg WC ,i think in about 2 weeks they will be reday to go into the tank, as i will have to take the older fry out first as they are getting so big ( big mouths), but i cant do that untill, my new tank is settled ( make sure its clear of whiespot etc after moving everone over)

anyway, i hope you get it sorted out

shelaghxxxx :):)
