I use a lilttle vacume on my gravel tank, but what do you do with sand? doesnt it all get sucked up?

Make little swirly motions above the sand to make a little tornado and pick uo the debris above the sand

I use a thick piece of tubing without the vacuum attachment. As Mr.September15 said, use a fanning or swirling motion keeping the end of the tube just off the bottom. With practice you will be able pick up the crud without gettin too much sand along with it.

The key is definitely the thickness of the tube IMO. I had no end of trouble till I bought a hose 3/4 inch wide. Then it worked wonders.
