Just wondering what people use for cleaning a sand substrate ?

I have one of those Marina Multivac Battery Aquarium Cleaners at the moment but find it either cleans nothing or draws up a hell of a lot of sand that ends up in the collection bag.

Any tips or names of some good cleaners would be great.

thanks.

using a standard gravel cleaner works well - - you just hover it about 1 - 1/2 inch above the substrate. poo is lighter than sand and will get sucked up, leaving the sand where it is :good:

with a standard cleaner either hover it or do small rotations and inch above the sand the poo will rise up with each swil leaving the sand at the bottom

I use a standard cleaner as well as using a fish net. I run the fish net through the sand. The sand falls through leftover food if any and poo stay in the net. I clean the net in tank water that I have just sucked out. I only do the net portion once a month as I do not like to disturb the tank too much.

The marina is great with sand, just swirl it around about 1 inch above the surface, it creates a sort of tornado effect and you can suck it up.

Thanks for the tips

guess I will have to perfect my technique in order just to scoop the poop. :D
