Hi

Wanted to ask how often you clean your filter and how often you change out old filter media for new. I know manufacturers tell you change things more often so you buy more of their products, but it's not necessary to do it as often as they say.

I have a Fluval 304 and the built in Juwel Filter on 260l tank. I usually clean the top filter pad in the internal filter with each water change, and rarely go near the other. In the external, there's zeolite crystals, carbon and ceramic rings alongside the foam pads. I've also squeezed in some more filter wool alongside the pads to give some extra polishing to the water. Now, while I have crystal clear water, I know that if I open up the filter, it's going to be full of gunk, and the wool and pads are going to be dirty. I read that some filters are not cleaned out for up to a year. The temptation is to clean it every two months or so, but I guess this is not necessary.

What do you do?

When I ran the internal Juwel on it’s own - I had to rinse all the blue sponges on a weekly basis and replace the white pad weekly. Juwel filters have a very gentle flow, and when clogged, are almost non-existent. I also had to push the siphon into the lower chamber to such up sludge and debris weekly - and was the power head under a shower jet.

I've since replaced my internal Juwel with an external Eheim - and only check / rinse the media every few months or so.
