Hi All,
New to the website and looking for info.
My tank had cycled for 3 weeks with 2 goldfish before it was at normal settings. I added 3 plattys on Monday. I have two questions.

First question is I have a wisper power filter 10. How often to I replace the cartridge. Can I just clean it with tank water? Mind you I bought the setup from someone but I have a 20 gal tank high.

Second question is how soon can I add another batch of fish and how many.

Thanks

what size is the tank?

Are the goldfish still in there along with the platies?

If my conversion is correct its 20 gallons = 75.8 liters?
Yes the goldfish are still in the tank with the platies.

You will have to look at rehoming the goldfish I'm afraid as the tank isnt big enough for them.

Are they fancy goldfish or common goldfish?

I believe that fancy goldfish require 20 gall for 1 goldfish and nothing else in the tank at all plus then another 10 gall for each additional fancy goldfish. They grow in excess of 12"

Common goldfish require 30 gall for the first fish then 10 gall per goldfish after that. They grow in excess of 16"

All goldfish also require at least double filtration as they are large waste producers.

It is a common misconception that goldfish can live in small tanks and 'bowls' which seems to stem from the period when they were given away as prizes at funfairs which I believe is now illegal in the UK.

Goldfish can also live for 20 years.

They are common goldfish and I have been meaning to rehome (good word). With that being the case can you answer

- First question is I have a wisper power filter 10. How often to I replace the filter. how long can I just wash the filter in the bucket of water just emptied from the tank ? Mind you I bought the setup from someone but I have a 20 gal tank high.

If your tank has been cycled correctly and the filter media is mature then you should clean it every 1/2 months or when the flow from your filter slows down. To clean the sponges / media just swills them and give them a gentle squeeze in a bucket of old tank water. NEVER wash them in clean tap water. The only time you need to replace the filter sponges is when they are physically falling apart.

If you are planning on rehoming the goldfish then you would be able to stock upto around 20" of adlut fish in the tank. The best thing to do is find out which fish you like, then research them or ask on here regarding the fish's adult size.

thank you. So I can add another 3 fish after 3 or 4 days of introducing the last batch of fish.
my lfs said I should replace the filter every 3 weeks.

Don't listen to your lfs, they will only want you to replace your filter sponges because your spending money in their shop. The only part of your filter you will need to replace every 3/4 weeks is white filter floss, but not sure if your filter has it, not every filter does. Your main filter sponges just need to be cleaned as I instructed.

You can only add 3 more fish IF you have rehomed your goldfish. Dont put anymore fish into that tank whilst them goldfish are still in it because you'd be asking for trouble. Your filter will probably be having a hard time coping with the waste being created from the goldfish already.
