Sorry if this is in the wrong section or if it has been gone over many times. I've searched and found nothing.

I recently purchased a 55 gallon tank off craigslist and i'm having a problem cleaning this white stuff off of...just about every where! I've got the glass pretty good with a razor blade being VERY careful not to cut into the sealant. But I didn't really want to use the razor on the plastic unless I had to. I didn't want to use any harsh chemicals either but the other day in desparation, I tried a little CLR on a few spots and it didn't help much! What can I do? It's almost to the point where I'm just going to buy all new stuff!

Try some vinegar...though I would think that if anything were going to take it off it would be CLR or the like.

You have to SOAK in pure CLR for atleast an hour or two, then scrub for a bit... MOST IMPORTANT is to RINSE, RINSE, RINSE afterwards.

Mineral deposits are a serious problem. Another suggestion (besides the above) that some people have had success with is to buy a couple fresh lemons and cut a "holdable" (in your gloved hand) piece and dip it into vinegar, carrying a lot of vinegar to the surface with it and then rubbing a small area of the black plastic with this combo, letting the lemon juice mix in and using rind to just rub on the mineral deposit for quite a while. The take an old toothbrush and work on this small spot gently, then alternate back to the lemon rind for a while. I don't know, see what you think and give us a report if you try this vs. the other acid approaches.
