I went into the fish shop near my dad's house and they were selling clams for £1.95 a peice. I've never seen clams on sale before. Anyone got any experience with them?

The guy in the shop was telling me that they open up and are gorgeous colours inside..... although i'm sure keeping them with fish would mean that once the clam opens it becomes dinner...

just curious anyway :)

Were they saltwater? Many reef tanks have strong enough lighting to support saltwater clams, and they can be VERY beautiful. The light must be of the proper spectrum to support the special algae that lives inside the clam's tissue and which produces nutrients for the clam; they also do a wonderful job of "filter-feeding". Several different varieties of clams are available, and while all within a variety share common traits, there is enough of a difference in the coloration and markings to be able to distinguish individual clams from others like it. They are really neat animals!!!!!

Edit: Yes, they can become a meal for not only fish, but also starfish, crabs, etc. Tankmates must be chosen carefully.

Oooh they sound quite cool.

The ones I saw were freshwater, although they did sell marine too...

I dont think they would be suitable for any of my tanks, but something to bear in mind for the future :D
