hi i am a newbie and would like to get some african cichlids are these pretty easy for a begginer? and also was going to cycle a tank with sum guppys would they be able to live with the cichlids im guessing not,any help would be great B)

i have a chichlid tank. They are VERY easy to take care of with regular water changes and test. I have water from a well, so its perfect water for them. They are very strong fish, ive only lost one in 5 months, just make sure you have enough so they dont fight

how much water do u change per week?im all new to this and havnt even got a tank yet but will be getting one soon i dont have a well so will have to treat the water for cholrine any pics of ur tank m8? :D

If you read through the pinned topics (the ones at the top of the list) I'm sure a lot of your current questions will be addressed. And of course new ones will be born. There are a lot of little details that go into planning your tank that, may not "be a big deal", but they will help set the mood of your aquarium. What size tank? what substrate (sand or gravel)? live plants? and on and on...

There are 2 basic approaches to cycling, with fish or fishless. Doing it with guppies will work (I just cycled a 55 Gal with guppies) and there are benefits as the guppies can be a welcoming meal for your Africans when they get there.

It may seem like a lot but basically if you do a couple hours research, then tons of thinking, then another hour or two... before buying anything... you can save some time and money and then later on you won't be thinking... 'man, I wish I had gotten _____ instead of _____.'

Also there is another forum that is specifically for African Cichlids. Ya might want to ask your questions about cycling and setting up your tank here and your questions more directed at Africans in that forum. You'll get more detailed answers there...

Good Luck!

evofish, there are so many types of cichlids, it's impossible to generalize. They range from 1" long to 2 feet long. The range from able to survive in a toilet to needing absolutely perfect water. They range from needing a 10 gallon tank to needing a 150 gallon tank. Some need to be overstocked to keep aggression down, some can not be overstocked in any way.

I hate to complicate things, but so far assumptions have been made that shouldn't be. Have you any idea of what kind of cichlid you are thinking about, or what area (new world or african rift) or at least what size tank you are thinking of using?

Um... yeah.. I knew that... just seeing if you're paying attention!

Ok, so let us start with the basics. What size is the tank?
