Honestly, this isn't a particularly good way to think about starting off with mbuna. Space is important, even for less aggressive species like yellow labs, and shouldn't be taken lightly. Painting yourself into a corner early is rarely a good idea.

To answer your question, I would say a 30g tank (36" long) could work as a species tank for around 5 or 6 yellow labs.
