I might look in to some dwarfs origanly i was thinking a combination of 2 diffrent fish out of a convict, firemouth, andrainbow and a couple of barbs but i just dont know now i have to think.

Firemouths need a min of 55g.

No offence Lisa, but your often saying fish need bigger tanks than they actually do (in my humble opinion)

I agree with some your comments about fish and tanks (and there are lots of comments by you) and i appreciate that your "text book" approach has the best interests of the fish at heart but i dont always agree, but thats the nature of forums and again i know you have the best interests of the fish at heart, but at the end of the day i think you should include the quote "in an ideal world" at the end of some of your posts

please dont get over excited here, i think your posts are "fair enough" about tank sizes, i just notice that you always tell peeps that certain fish "need" certain size tanks. They dont always "need" the max size tank.

EDIT: i know you quote various links Lisa, so fair play but to just come out with a random "Firemouths need 55 gallon" i dont think is entirely accurate

What about a 2" Firemouth? (and i know it will grow and i think the owner needs to consider that and plan accordingly, but not neccessarily go out any buy a massive tank as if the Firemouth was fully grown NOW)

We dont all need to have the max size tank for any given fish Lisa, i think perhaps your comment could be

"if you have a fully grown Firemouth you best off with a 55 gallon tank really"

Fry - I get your point, and thanks for putting it so nicely too (much appreciated!), but I just dont have time to type out

"In an ideal world for an adult fish and not a 2" specimen it would be best if it were possible for them to maybe have a 55g but of course I appreciate it's not always possible but it would be best for them as they can get to 6-7" but in the meantime they could be in a smaller tank you could maybe get away with a 20g, or a 29g or even a 40g or maybe you could just go out and get the 55g as they'll need it in the long run."

...when I could just say....

"Adult firemouths need a 55g".

I've got 5 kids and no patience and dont like to fanny about with my words lol :good:

I dont see what the huge deal is with trying to offer the biggest tank you can - it's not as if tanks are expensive (all of mine have been under £100 apart from making the mistake of buying new with my first big one), and a 55g is hardly going to take up tonnes of space or break the bank. Had I said "It'll need a 180g" or something way over, I could understand people being up in arms about it - but a 55g takes up minimal space and would mean he could have a pair and some other fish like he wanted.

Anyway, thanks again for being polite about it - I wish more people thought like you before they typed!

LOL, thanks Lisa, i wasnt expecting such a polite reply (maybe its the pessimistic nature in me LOL)

you raise some very valid points there and yes it would be better if people planned more for the long term and not just "today" i do very much agree with that - think Vancouver said that - but it's the same point as what you make Lisa.

I am gona put up a29g just cause i have it all ready, all the equipment in my basement from years past, i do not want to get a new 55g cause i live in a small appartment and am planning on buy or looking for a house around this coming fall so i was just gona stick to what i got. Plus after i find a house and get settled in i plan on getting some thing bigger like a 125g so i dont want to buy a tank a bit bigger just to buy a bigger one later.I just have an itch now to put up this tank. You know just to quench my thirst for now. It will still be at least like 6months befor i really try to get to a house so i just wanted something now. I thank you all for your advice and opinons and welcome any ones that you have. I have heard from here and other places 2 cons would probally work, Could i get 1 con and something else i plan on getting whater at juvinals. Thanks for the help... :good:

i have been keeping convicts in various set-ups for a while, in my humble opinion a 29 gal tank is easily, easily big enough for a breeding pairs of convicts or even two convicts not breeding (as long as they can co-exist relatively peacefully)

I really think a 20g is adequate actually. I know that might go against some peeps views (whom i really respect) but thats my view anyhow!

You might get away with convicts in a 29g tank if you have tons of hiding places..

A convict and another fish probably wont work..

I really don't know why people breed convicts anymore.. I see ads for free convicts everywhere, as people breed them, then have nothing to do with 50+ fry.

LOL to that

well for me its the behaviour, i still love it and always will!!!!!!!!!!

i never have a problem shifting or moving on the fry and its not about the money anyway!!!! At one point i had 3x pairs and was getting about 150 fry every 4 weeks, once they grew a bit (about 8 weeks old) i never had a problem finding them homes

you can also leave the fry in with mum and dad, and if mum and dad breed again with the fry there, the fry will eat the new borns anyway (its not what i do normally, but its an option)

not to get off the subject just one quick question:

now here is a stupid question i have been wondering for sometime. I dont know what type of filtewr is what i just know to see them. I have the one that hangs on the back of my tank with the intake piece in the tank it takes carbon sacks and got the spunge. How often should i clean it, and how do i clean it with out killin all the good bacteria.
