Cichlid Substrate

As a relative newcomer to the world of cichlids any advice is greatly received. I know that crushed coral is seen as a good substrate but could you grow plants in this? How about sand in a Cichlid set up? What do you guys have as a substrate and does anyone have a planted Cichlid tank? Thanks

they generally eat and destroy plants as far as im aware.
