i have some cichlids that have holes in their heads, and i read up on it and found out that it was hole-in-the-head diseases. my beautiful red oscar, texas, and my jaguar cichlid got it :( , and i'm wondering if anyone out there has ever have had exp. with this stinken diseases. please let me know and thanks very much in advance too!!!!!!!

HITH is caused by a parasite Hexemita. It's caused by poor water conditions, poor diet, or a combination. It is curable with the repeated medication, but gets tougher to conquer the longer it is allowed to fester. Treating would, of course, include altering the problem that caused it so it isn't repeated.

how long does it take to cure it? and does the medication bought form my local petstore do any good?

The last part of freddy's reply ; water quality .
Also more partial water changes ie , if you're doing 1 , 20% each week , add another water change midway thru the week , you need to treat your fish with meds , cleaner water will help them heal.[ you'll also be going after the source of your problem ] :D [ change water before adding meds , and maybe before additional dosing ]

It's hard to cut down on feeding with these types of fish , but you can change water more frequently . :) Good luck .

doing frequent water changes will help take care of the HITH, here is the deal though HITH is never totally cured, and the pitting is perminate.

though not that I doubt you but it would be helpful if we could see a pic of the fish, as both fish also have a ring of sensory pores surrounding their heads which is often confused with being HITH.

out of interest, what size tank are they in?

 I many cases water changes alone can help correct the problem , many illness problems for that matter . :D

my oscar and texas are in a 70gallon tank now until i get a bigger one, and my jaguar is in another 70gallon and will go into another bigger tank with my red devil. thanks for the tips on how to deal with HITH :) .
