i'm looking to do a 29 tall tank that i wantot do with cichlids. I have heavy ornaments in it now, with just 1 chinese algae eater. what types of cichlids like heavily rooted water with few if any plants? if there are any?

get rid of the algea eater becuase that type will eat the slim off the fish and ya. not good

but you could do a pair of convicts- there good to watch because they are really good parents ( thats the only fish that could be in there because all others would be beat up)

some rams- very peacful

and i don't know - if you get a bigger tank so much more options.

Chinese Algae Eaters stop eating algae when the grow older, and become rather territorial and aggressive as well. Hence why they are actually a poor choice for algae removal.

Do you have a high pH? African cichlids enjoy hard/alkaline water with no plants, but your tank might be a little on the small side for many of them b/c they are active swimmers.

If you wanted to go with SA cichlids then you could do a pair of dwarfs like Rams, Apistogramma, etc. Just a warning though...if you go with convicts as was recommended earlier 1) they breed like rabbits, and 2) they get very vicious while spawning/ raising fry and thus will attack any fish too slow to avoid them.

i've only had him for 2 months, but he is full grown and we've come to refer to him as the Chinese Jerk due to his territorial actions. He's a hardy thing too, he spent 1-2 hours out of the tank burried in a root before being placed in a tank i'm cycling.

the 29 is heavily rooted with no plants, so maybe i will go with a pair of cichlids...or open to any other suggestions for this tank:

try gold saums, good to watch when they are breeding, but when they are breeding they dont like other fish.I have one male and two females in the same tank,he is breeding with the two of them at the same time one at each end of the tank, cool a.

Nice idea but not in a 29 tall i'm afraid. A 55 gal should be the minimum for a pair of any of the larger, aggressive NW cichlids IMO.
