Hi everyone, I've recently decided to try and start a new tropical fish tank. Obviously the first step I have to take is to choose a tank!!! I'm hoping I can get some help here as I have found a bewildering array of choices. I live in a small studio flat so I'm not looking for anything too big (probably couldn't manage anything big anyway seeing as this is my first tank), I'm thinking of getting a tank around 30-50L. I kinda liked the look of the Biorbs and Biorb Life tanks and also the Fulval edge, but I have read the biorbs suck for value and the fulval edge is not very well designed. I am now tending towards something like an Arcadia Arc or an Interpet Fish pod. Does anyone have one of these or can someone recommend something else? Thanks!!!

Also a good value place to get fish and equipment would be great  (I live in London, of course online shops would be great too)

Hi welcome along :) The Arc Pods are great little tanks but if you can go bigger go bigger :) Its always a good rule with fish but smaller tanks are manageable you just need to be really careful with what you stock - and if your really really careful you can end up with a stunning tank :)

In London your best bets for fish are Wholesale Tropicals in Bethnal Green and the Aquatic Design Centre on Great Portland Street :) I live in Hull (Yorkshire) and know of how good they are, I got my Nicaraguan (in my pic to the side) from the Aquatic Design Centre about 2 years ago great shop! Make sure you look around downstairs its great!!

Thanks Wills I have already visited Aquatic Design Centre, they do have some great looking fish and they had some tanks while might fit my requirements as well but I was wondering if their prices are good or can I get a better deal online? I will certainly go back when I'm ready for fish

Check ebay for fluval roma 90 litre tanks, often lots up for sale 2nd hand and can be a good bargain with everything you need ready to go. They are a nice beginners size tank, not to big, not too small. Do you best to get a decent size tank, water management is far easier. small tanks can become polluted quickly if something goes wrong. Avoid biorbs and small fluvals like the plague.

I suggest having a read of the beginners resource section on cycling your filter so you dont make the daft mistake of coming home with fish or day one and having them snuff it because the filter isnt ready for your new tank. (Cycling a filter can take weeks, so have a good read up)

go for the biggest tank you can fit into your space. The bigger the tank the easier it is too keep (though stuff like water changes will take longer)... Ebay is a good source :)
