Which filter should I use for a 55.
I have a new penguin 330 filter in excelent condition.
My friend is giving me an older magnum 350 in used condition.
The magnum 350 will need new tubing and I have never used it before.
Is the parts for the magnum the same? So I can change them?
If I use the magnum should I get an inline heater?

Which filter should be used?

Depending on what you keep in the tank, I think this would be fine. Remember that 350 and 330 are optimal flow rates. The flow rates on Magnums slow down pretty quickly if you messy eaters like cichlids.

I used to run two magnum 350's on a 55 with good success. I just alternated which filter I would clean out every other week. I also pointer the outles at the glass so there wouldn't be as much current.

Well, I was thinking of plants, angels and tetras

I have an overfiltered 55 with angels. Like anvil63 stated, directing the flow is the key.

Hi. I use a Penguin 350 on my 55. I find it creates quite a bit of current. In my opinion, anything over 5x filtration is overfiltered, but i guess the amount needed all depends on what fish you keep and how many. My tank is understocked right now but i don't plan on overstocking, and or keeping big messy fish. Since you are getting the Magnum for free, try setting it up to see how much current you get. If you can point the outflow such that the flow is minimized as suggested above then i'd go with both. They say you can never have enough filtration, but obviously too much current is undesireable.
