Hi, I'm new to this forum and looking for some urgent advice. A few hours ago a friend of one of my kids tipped a load of fish food into my tank when I wasn't looking.

I have 3 platys, 2 danios and 2 scissor tails in there, as well as a nursery of 6 baby platys.

I fished as much as I could out with a net, then got my spare filter out and used my syphon to get as much out of the gravel as I could and I just syphoned some more off.

The problem is firstly that I'm worried about changing too much of the water in one go, I must have got pretty close to 50% already, and secondly the platys look like their stomachs are distended from eating.

Is there anything else I can do? Should I change any more water to get the last of the food out or just wait and see what happens.

Thanks for any help.

Check your water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
Add some fresh filter floss to the filter.

I would do a 25% water change (via gravel vaccing) for the next few days
also do not feed you fish for at least 4 days as this will give them time to digest what they have gorged on.

as wilder has said, keep your eye on the water params, especially ammonia and NO2

Thanks, I'll have to go and buy a testing kit as I haven't got one at the moment. The water is really cloudy this morning, so I'm going to vac a bit more out later and also buy some fresh sponge for my filters.

I haven't fed the fish at all since the incident and they're all still alive, so fingers crossed.

I started building my aquarium up only a few of months ago so I'm still new to all this.

If you don't have test kits I would advise in investing in liquids test kits in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
take a sample of your water to the lfs and tell them to write the readings down for you.
Gravel vac, water change and increase aeration till you get to know your water stats.
Good luck.
