Just Ctrl+F cichlid, there are 87 there, plenty to choose from :D

I think some fish are illegal because people release them into the wild, and they somehow survive and form an invasive population. Since these are tropical fish, though, chances are they'll die off come winter, if they survive that long.

I find that weird, as I live in California and all cichlids are legal, but piranhas and freshwater stingrays are illegal. Yet I can get a Golliath African tiger fish and just about any kind of gar I could ever want...

I don't under stand  Your link is for Unrestricted fish that need NO permit or license to obtain and can be sold or traded at pet shops.

Listed Species:The following species of fish and wildlife, including tropical fish and invertebrates, do not require an importation permit or possession permit, and may be traded by commercial pet shops

And I see every common cichlid that are sold at pet shops in the U.S

Yes, he asked for fish that are legal in Maine, and the fish on the list are legal in Maine
There might be one or two cichlids that are illegal, I didn't actually look through it.

Your link was perfect  and my response was to the question...They are all legal...And you can probably walk into any pet shop and buy one. So is the question about something more uncommon to have imported?
