Cherry Shrimp

Hi all,

Is £10.50 for 5 cherry shrimp a good price, my LFS is doing a "deal" at the moment, i've been after some for ages..

Also, would adding these to my 35 Litre be ok, with the 3 amanos and 1 platy? I'm aiming for mainly a shrimp tank you see

Have you looked in the classified section on the forum, I think there`s a couple of people who are selling some?

Hi Elise! ^^ Thanks, but my little 35L I don't think would handle adding 20! I only want a few more due to the 3 amano and platy already in there.

There are some others going... but say their colour isn't good, that they are grey? It says they are young, is this normal?

I just wanted to show you that you can get them cheaper than £2.00+ each.

I reckon a 35ltr could definitely take more than 5 RC shrimp anyway, especially seeing as you have only 3 Amano and if you were to look at getting at least 10 you`d pay less than your lfs is selling them for.

I don`t have many decent sized at the moment, they`re mostly babies and your platy is likely to eat them so I won`t offer to post any to you

Hmm....

My LFS also had yellow ones, but I was a bit dubious as i've never heard of Yellow Cherry Shrimp.. they were also expensive, i'm guessing rare?

I think the yellows are a variant of the Red Cherry, just not as readily available so I guess that`s why they may cost a little bit more

After chatting to the guy at my lfs about shrimps, the yellows, sunkist (orange) and RC`s are all very hardy and have the same requirements but 'apparently' the RC`s tend to be a bit more aggressive....how true that is I don`t know. The RC`s and sunkist (2) that I have all get on well together and I don`t ever see any aggression from the RC`s.
Whether or not you get the yellows is up to you, depends if you can get them for the same price I guess. I still reckon you can get RC`s cheaper but it`s your call at the end of the day

I'll perhaps get 5-7 Reds and 2-3 Yellows, this will definately not overstock my tank?

I make sure I do atleast 20% water change in the 35L every weekend.

shrimps add very very little to the bioload of a tank. In a 35l tank, you'll have 40+ in 3 months.

Shrimps eat poop so I guess they 'recycle' and then recycle some more

do shrimps require salty water? I've got cories that can't have any salt.
