Hi, I've been thinking about getting some shimps in my tank but I'm not sure how well they'd get on with my fish!
My lfs does some gorgeous cherry and fire shrimp but I'm worried that the cherry shrimp at least are so little that they'll get eaten!

Does anyone know which fish you can/can't keep shrimp with and whether you can get larger shimps which won't be in so much danger in a tank full of fish??

Thanks

what fish do you have?

I'm in the same dilemma at the moment. I have cherry shrimp already and I'm now trying to find some bottom level fish and a couple of larger show case fish that aren't going to eat them :)

The shrimp I have are very small and I expect pretty much anything that could fit one in its mouth would at least give it a try. I would imagine you are ok with the majority of tetras, cory's, danios, etc.

if your fish's mouth can fit a shrimp, then its not compatible, if not, probably safe.

You do also have to worry a little about nipping though. Fish could rip them apart, little piece by piece.

eugh, I don't like the idea of the poor shrimpys getting ripped apart!!!!!

my main concern is that i've got a kissing gourami - shes only tiny atm (not even 2 inches yet) but I'm guessing she's still going to be a problem!!

Any ideas of larger shrimp that won't seem so tasty? Like i say . my lfs has got fire shrimp and they're much bigger than the cherrys - would they be suitable or am i just doomed to be shrimpless? lol

I'm pretty sure your gourami would have no issues with eating cherry shrimp. You might be able to get away with a larger filter feeding shrimp but even then there might be problems. There is a very large filter feeding shrimp (I think its called a vampire shrimp) that might be big enough to give most fish pause before having a go but if I remember correctly it is really big so you would need a big enough tank for it (double check this but I seem to remember them being at least 8 inchs, despite their size though they are fine with smaller fish).

A kissing gourami is pretty large, and its mouth is not small either. You might have trouble with him being compatible with any shrimp really :/ .

okey doke! well thanks for all your help.

I'll have a look into those vampire shrimps and give up on the smaller ones until I've got a more suitable community!

Thanks

I have 100 shrimp in a breeding tank, but also have about 10 in my community tank.

They are housed in community with platys, guppys, dwarf guarami, 2 pakistani loaches and a sucking loach and have no trouble.

I wouldnt trust a kissing guarami with them though... plus any babies are likely to be eaten in a community tank.

I would also recommend having a well planted tank, as the cherrys will hide safely in the plants (jave moss, java fern etc) when moulting.

Hope this helps.

I am setting up a website soon as I have over 100 of them and am planning on breeding similar numbers of Bumble Bee shrimp and Tiger Shrimp soon!
