Many thanks for all the answers guys but I think I was more concerned about whether or not I was right to have it on all the time. Intuitively I would think running a small electrical devise continuously would be a mistake but I worry about aerating the tank. What do you more experienced guys do?

Ooops, this should have gone on the thread, PUMP NOISE, sorry, I'm a duffus!

You must leave it on all the time 24/7 or else the bacteria colony will slowly die and there will be no oxygen for your fish.

The filter pump needs to be on 24/7

If its an air pump most tanks do not need as long as the filter pump exit pipe is positioned to agitate the surface of the water. Thats how oxygen gets into the water at the surface.

Thats my understanding

Oxygen can go into the water from the air bubbles, but not much. The vast majority of oxygen enters the tank through the surface. So, increasing the surface area, by increasing surface agitation increases the oxygen capacity of the tank. The bubbles can increase surface agitation, and thereby increase oxygenation in the tank. Also, dropping water into the tank from height increases the oxygenation of the tank as well - splashing is good for that as it also increases the surface area.
